I can imagine that from your perspective, it must seem like some truly awful things happen in time and space. So if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to weigh in.

Rachel, you live in a world of illusions. A world that springs from a much deeper and far greater reality. And while at times the illusions are indeed ugly, with your physical senses you only see the tip of the iceberg. If you could see the whole, you'd discover that the unpleasantness was only the tiniest piece of a most spectacular puzzle that was created with order, intelligence, and absolute love. You'd see that contrary to appearances, in the grandest scheme of things, nothing is ever lost, no one becomes less, and setbacks are always temporary. And you'd understand that no matter what has happened, everyone lives again, everyone laughs again, and everyone loves again, even more richly than before.

ode to noodles

my first experience with this restaurant was by the gorgeous indiana university campus.
i'm lucky enough to have one right by my campus as well.
http://www.noodles.com/
not only is their site adorable, but they have the best mac n cheese and pad thai ever. how many places (besides ny's vinyl) can you say that about?
it definitely helps me cope with the empty building that used to be filled with a glorious wawa.

i won't see sleep tonight

and i have to come up with more original blog titles.

having some trouble at this point in the semester.
i haven't had to write a paper over 2 pages in length all semester, so my writing skills are incredibly rusty. on a good note, i've improved my research skills immensely, so i have piles of articles, notes, etc and i find it all incredibly interesting BUT i can't seem to launch into writing my first substantial papers that are now finally coming up.
so..i'm writing here as a warm-up, i guess. thursday i have a paper due on German theatrical expressionism and the pioneer work in Murderer, The Hope of Womankind by Oskar Kokoschka. It seems my professors love to give me German stuff. Last year, all of my major projects were on Brecht and Wedekind, and now it continues. But I love it. Mother Courage is one of my favorite plays, and of course Spring Awakening....
Annnnyway...I also have to rewrite my reflection on my presentation i gave in ethnomusicology. he said it was too short. maybe because my presentation was cut short due to the fact my family came to pick me up so i could attend my aunt's funeral? i wasn't even supposed to come in to class that day, gimme a break. plus, i swear half the kids in that class don't even know how to read music.
Then, a paper on Uncle Tom's Cabin and the early pro/anti-abolitionist staging practices.
And finally, my global communities research practicum which I've chosen to write on black theatre, focusing on the two major movements from the late 1950s-late 70s (and maybe throwing in some passing strange)
And I still have to memorize those lines from Durang's 'Dentity Crisis

i i i i i identity
utah in january, please.

We did it, America. I've never felt more patriotic in my life.
Yesterday was a combination of Christmas Eve and New Years...the anticipation -- and did you see that crowd in Chicago? People hugging strangers, kissing loved ones. Absolutely perfect.
(Side note: I love Mama Biden)
finally finally FINALLY I can be 100% proud of my country again.
I have some republican friends who will not be named who hurt my heart last night:
"****is wondering why the hell the majority of Americans with a family income of over $200,000 would vote for Barack Obama!? The stupidity is unreal to me."
"**** is getting started on building that bomb shelter he's always wanted. I better start now while I still can afford it."
I will never understand. Ever. My respect for him has definitely dropped, I can't help it.
I wish I could erase all of this negativity but for now I will live in blissful ignorance because my man won the presidency. And that is cause for celebration.

cinnamon vanilla bean cappucinos are yummy

just got out of my astronomy midterm, which i already know i could have done much better on. but sleep is more important to me than popping adderol to study. plus, the news i received yesterday definitely would've hindered any serious efforts to memorize facts about how the universe was created, anyway.
i know we've all talked about it, but i can't believe how quickly the time is approaching now.
soon, it will be a year since the last time i saw spring awakening and it will be my real last time seeing spring awakening. that 2nd row $130 ticket is looking really good right now, but i just don't have the money. so once again, i will be sleeping out on the streets in the dead of winter with some of my favorite people in the world (at my favorite city in the world). not a terrible tradeoff.
but seriously, if someone wants to tell me where this past year has gone, please let me know. too fast.
my show closes this weekend. then i will have time to focus on my other classes.
i'll be asming Kushner's adaptation of The Illusion next semester, directed by Mich Hebert (he did rabbit hole this summer @ olney).

Lovely blue float down and all the people's voices seem to grow quiet...

Performance night two. We had a standing ovation for opening :)

New Years 1964, twenty minutes to five.
Outside: white snow, black trees, the rapidly falling darkness. My soul leaps out of me. This year will be work. Glorious work.

And I remember all the twilights I have ever known. They float across my eyes.
I think of forests and picnics, of being very warm in something cotton, of smelling the earth and loving life. Long live good life and beauty and love.

Journal entry undated: if anything should happen before 'tis done, may I trust that all
commas and periods will be placed and someone will complete my thoughts. This last should be the least difficult, since there are so many who think as I do.

What use are flowers?! Well, ah, but the uses of flowers are infinite!

I want to be a stage manager
Lucky for me, I am asming the first show of the year at UMD, To Be Young, Gifted and Black, a portrait of Lorraine Hansberry in her own words (adapted by Robert Nemiroff). One of my best friends at college is the sm and it opens this Thursday. This is the best group of people I've worked with. The cast is so supportive of each other, the lighting is absolutely gorgeous, and the director is fabulous.
I worked with Scot during my first ever production at UMD, Urinetown, and he is just such a wonderful teacher. He is incredibly professional but also takes into account that we are students. He takes every opportunity to teach a lesson and always brings us food and little gifts. I swear he will be 19 years old forever, I don't know how he does so much and stays so happy and energized. Although I have had no free time, it has been such a wonderful process that it does not bother me one bit.

truly, heaven must feel like this

spring awakening

it opened my heart and mind
to new people
new experiences

It was because of the first time I saw the show for my 17th birthday that I wanted to join street team
It was because of street team that my mother finally let me travel into the city by myself
It was because of street team that I met one of my best friends, Jon
It was because of Pun's kindness that led me to believe that maybe i will be successful in this industry
It was because of lunch with Pun followed by stage door that I met my hero, Johnny
It was because of my interest in Johnny's music that I got introduced to my favorite band Old Springs Pike
It was because of my love for this band and that I met the rest of the TGT: stef, kate, melissa, michelle
It was because of Spring Awakening that I became friends with Amanda, a girl who went to my high school whom I otherwise would have only been acquaintances
It was because of this bond that the seven of use share that i got through some of most emotional moments of my life
It was because of Johnny that I was introduced to Seth and the unbelievably fantastic Ragtag productions
It was because of Seth that I found Megan, the kindest, most creative, beautiful and peaceful woman I know
It was because of Megan that I wanted to be a better person
It was because of these people that I met their friends and family -- Nina, my other mother, June, beautiful caring songstress, Darcy, infectiously fabulous playwright, Jeffrey, a ray of sunshine...

the list goes on and has not stopped.
even now typing this entry, i feel as strongly about the impact this show has had on me than i did the first time i saw it.
when it closes, so will the most treasured chapter of my life
.
it has touched me beyond comprehension.

Love

If you have it, you don't need to have anything else
and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter much what else you have.
-Sir James M. Barrie

About once a month I get into this sulky mood where I sit there wondering why I seem to be the only person in the world who has never been in love. And I hate it. I have so many extraordinary people in my life and I know how blessed I am, but I get tired of being one of the only people I know to have never had even one relationship. I feel that it's such an important experience to have in ones life that I am just completely missing out on. My friends tell me that my time will come, and I know I'm only 18, but I'm sick of waiting. Is that selfish? Have I done something to not even deserve a try? How can I give my friends relationship advice when I've never been through one myself? I don't know where I'm going with this. I just feel the need to let out my feelings on this subject every once and a while. Do I care too much?
Maybe I'm just afraid of being alone.

wellness wednesday: finally a home

back in college park. it was time. although my immune system is in dis-agreement (i've had a nasty cold all throughout move in and the preliminary days of classes) i feel more confident and comfortable than i did down the hall one year ago. even past floormates have noticed my happier aura.
it's funny how things work themselves out. because i could not return to maryland until this weekend instead of the assigned thursday, i was able to end my summer with one last trip to the city and, just as the summer before, i spent it seeing james heather and james play (mtv recording then, conan recording now). i can't believe it has been a year since i've become a college student and a year since i met my best friends.
this semester is going to be good for me. all my classes start at 9 so i am forced to get up before the hour turns to double digits. also, i am going to fully delve into the world of stage management. the only thing i am worried about it my astronomy course, because i have not done a single math problem in 2 years. but i'm excited for the challenges ahead and the path i have created for myself.
i think i'm going to study abroad in london next semester. i was going to wait until junior year but i don't want to put it off any longer. i can't miss out on this.
and i know it's only september, but i have decided what my new years resolution will be. this january brought a lot of changes to everyone i know and i've decided that i would like some closure on it all by the same date one year later. i am still upset as is everyone involved and it makes me even more upset knowing everyone is still so heartbroken over it.
Stef, Jon, Michelle, Melissa, Kate, Showgofa, Amanda...will you stay up until 9am again with me?

Religious Views: James McAvoy

he makes me cry in everything i see him in (not including the lion the witch and the wardrobe..
i'm mad at myself for not noticing him until this past spring break because he is just wonderful.
plus, you've gotta love him for this this:

The Scottish actor cannot bear to be apart from his wife - so has refused to take on any movie roles while his wife works on new projects. He tells Closer magazine, "We try to organize it so that one of us is there when the other is working...so I'm slowing down now and I'll be her bitch while she makes a movie!"

(it's late and i just finished watching becoming jane if you were wondering why i decided to pay this little homage now)

really happy i got to see passing strange one more time before it closes sunday. i'm not worried. spike lee should do a wonderful job of catching the live feeling on film...of course, nothing's better than being there seeing it breathe and unfold before you.

also happy about the response to emily's music video :) watch her other stuff, she's hilarious (enmilz on youtube)

it is not just because he was the only one i knew in the company, but james smith was the best part about the show last night. not only does he pour his heart and soul into all of his life's work, but he is the most charming person i've ever met [insert salt n pepa's whatta man lyrics here].

and last but certainly not least, august 3rd, i will finally be able to attend a johnny solo show after unwillingly missing out on the last 3-4 he's had over the past year. it makes me happy to see that one of the pictures i took of him is being used on his page on the joe's site.

The secret lies in the reading and the writing...

THERE'S a tree that grows in Brookyln. Some people call it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed falls, it makes a tree which struggles to reach the sky. It grows in boarded-up lots and grows out of neglected rubbish heaps. It grows up out of cellar gratings. It is the only tree that grows out of cement. It grows lushly... survives without sun, water, and seemingly without earth. It would be considered beautiful except that there are too many of it.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn just screams Melissa.
Favorite book of the summer, definitely.

i should've listened to my mom when she told me not to walk home from work tonight.
not only does it take at LEAST an hour for me to get home from port jeff on foot, but i'm guessing she was concerned with me getting raped or hit by a car (which, by the way, almost happened when this old man pulled over around 12:30am asking if i needed a ride. i'm sure he was honest, but you never know). however, i didn't take into consideration mr. global warming monster and the thunderstorm that started halfway through my walk. i didn't think any of my friends would be up so i am so thankful jayne called me and forcefully said "WE'RE PICKING YOU UP NOW"
they got me right when the raindrops were getting all fat and nasty. thanks for the ride, chrsitine <3

Don't You P-O-L-L-U-T-E The River Air Or Sky Or Sea...

(name that nicktoon)

At work the other day, this mother-daughter abercrombie duo were getting into their car and a plastic water bottle dropped on the ground. I guess picking up their garbage was below them so they got in and closed the door like nothing had happened. My manager said he'd give my supervisor a buck if he went to throw it out. So he goes outside and threw the water bottle back into the ladies car. Turns out he should've just thrown it in the garbage, because the girl in the passenger seat threw it back out onto the pavement anyway. Nice.

Juice Bars And Name Changes

despite tim russert's untimely death (still in shock), today has had a lot of ups:
(1) i am no longer unemployed!
so now i can
(2) afford to see my favorite band/people ever, newly dubbed The Spring Standards at their EP release show!

Heather, Smith and Cleare continue to amaze me day after day. Looking back on the first time I saw them play in the teensy basement of the Knitting Factory, I would have NEVER expected they would become such a huge part of my life (in under 2 years, at that). Right off the bat, it was a given that they were extremely talented and I would be coming back to see them play again and again, but I never even dreamed of getting to know them on this personal level that they allow all of their fans to be a part of. I have never met more caring and driven people in my entire life and I am so thankful every day for all that they give to their fans and friends. They're truly one of a kind. Words could never do them justice. I am beyond honored to be a part of their lives, for they have made mine so much more beautiful.

high school players: you guys are irreplaceable. thank you for having my back always. nobody had ever made me feel so loved until you all came into my life. you'll always be the security for my basement parties ;)

tgt: my soulmates. we have shared so many emotional experiences together it's insane. our heartstrings are so damn connected we would need a professional knot undoer (is there such a thing?) to pull us apart now. summer in the city. can't wait.

R.I.P. Stephen Stakey 5/2/08

I never met Stephen, but he was best friends to one of my high school buddies, Mike. My heart is with him as well as Stephen's family.
I don't know why, but this stranger's death hit me real deep. He sounded like such a genuine, wonderful person. So close to finishing his freshman year of college..

paranoia paranoia, everybody's coming to get me

"flagpole sitta" by harvey danger was just playing in the dining hall. i used to obsessively play this song of my Now 1 cd in my bedroom. the first cd was totally my guilty pleasure. not only was this golden '90s song on it, but they had radiohead's "karma police" and marcy playground's "sex and candy". nowadays, all that's on it is soulja boy.

preachers

i woke up this morning to a man preaching outside my window.
i never understood why they have to yell so damn loud.
if we want to listen, we will. don't try to force your 'teachings' on us by yelling your brains out.
personally, i don't want to listen to your babble. there's more real issues going on in the world that i'd much rather hear you talk about.
you've been preaching for a good 20 minutes now and i still have no idea what you're talking about. and now you're bringing up 9/11? oh, great. this reminds me of those made for tv preachers who are guilty of "sexual sins" and beating their wives. what happened to practicing what you preach? i'm not trying to demean anyone's personal beliefs. just don't force it on people who do not want to hear it.
i'm sorry but i am just very bitter towards these people because one of them happened to ruin my grandmother's funeral service by turning a speech about the life she lived into a story about how all the dead will rise out of their graves in the second coming or some bullshit like that. just let her rest in peace.

your voice is distracting me from reading king lear.
i'm gonna take a shower...this is making me depressed.

"but in my spare time i'm a seeker..."

Finally, I experienced a good lecture in Global Communities. We discussed Sufism and its beliefs, which I hold near and dear to my heart:
  • seek to discover the reality of your true being.
  • struggle to know the truth (that which is constant) within yourself.
  • the universe is perfect in essence. we are all capable to do more than we think imaginable.
  • create an equilibrium between all paths of energy, both physically and metaphysically. we are all interconnected.
  • travel inward, connect the brain to the heart - the true source of life.
  • our purposes are complimentary. if you want something bad enough, it will manifest itself to you.
  • nature, karma, revelation, beauty, remembrance, infinity.

Oh, music is the meat of all who love,
Music uplifts the soul to realms above.
The ashes glow, and latent fires increase:
We listen and are fed with joy and peace.
-Rumi

pleasantly surprised

In between classes today at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (CSPAC for short), there was a college tour going on and in the crowd I spotted a girl wearing a shirt with strangely familiar stick figures on it. My initial reaction was to scream out "OLD SPRINGS PIKE!" which I did. She immediately responded and we had a nice little bonding moment outside of the Applause Cafe. I was so excited to see another OSP fan (sadly, they're lacking on campus) that I forgot to ask her name. But maybe we'll meet again. I mean, they are playing in the area 3 times this weekend ;)
Honestly, ever since the WaWa by my dorm closed, Old Springs Pike concerts have become the number one perk about going to college in Maryland.  Thank god they're touring. EP. So soon.

Plans

I was supposed to go to the Green Apple Music Festival on the national mall today, but rain and light focus for Marisol are stopping me. Ed Norton and Umphrey's McGee are going to be there, too.

I just received this e-mail and found it quite amusing:

It makes me miss this time last year when Steph, Kat, Trish, Vince, Chris, Sean, Kim, Kerry and I would look up at the stars and run under the powerlines behind Amy's.

I hate when plans fall through. Now all I can do is hope for something unexpected and wonderful to happen in its place..I think this calls for my new $2 Value Village dress.
