The secret lies in the reading and the writing...

THERE'S a tree that grows in Brookyln. Some people call it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed falls, it makes a tree which struggles to reach the sky. It grows in boarded-up lots and grows out of neglected rubbish heaps. It grows up out of cellar gratings. It is the only tree that grows out of cement. It grows lushly... survives without sun, water, and seemingly without earth. It would be considered beautiful except that there are too many of it.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn just screams Melissa.
Favorite book of the summer, definitely.

Mama Knows Best

i should've listened to my mom when she told me not to walk home from work tonight.
not only does it take at LEAST an hour for me to get home from port jeff on foot, but i'm guessing she was concerned with me getting raped or hit by a car (which, by the way, almost happened when this old man pulled over around 12:30am asking if i needed a ride. i'm sure he was honest, but you never know). however, i didn't take into consideration mr. global warming monster and the thunderstorm that started halfway through my walk. i didn't think any of my friends would be up so i am so thankful jayne called me and forcefully said "WE'RE PICKING YOU UP NOW"
they got me right when the raindrops were getting all fat and nasty. thanks for the ride, chrsitine <3

missing maryland

don't you love when you're thinking about someone and find out they were thinking about you at that same exact moment? that just happened. i miss you, mcat! even if you texted me at 12:48am saying "you're a poop mouth!"
i sense anchorman (theatrical edition) in the near future.

Don't You P-O-L-L-U-T-E The River Air Or Sky Or Sea...

(name that nicktoon)

At work the other day, this mother-daughter abercrombie duo were getting into their car and a plastic water bottle dropped on the ground. I guess picking up their garbage was below them so they got in and closed the door like nothing had happened. My manager said he'd give my supervisor a buck if he went to throw it out. So he goes outside and threw the water bottle back into the ladies car. Turns out he should've just thrown it in the garbage, because the girl in the passenger seat threw it back out onto the pavement anyway. Nice.

OMGFACEBOOK!

i have this friend on facebook who has at least 8 albums filled with pictures they take of themselves. they have about 40 more albums and at least a third of them are also made up of pictures of themselves.
in my opinion, there's more beauty in the world than taking over 1000 myspace style pictures of yourself. but maybe that's just me.

Juice Bars And Name Changes

despite tim russert's untimely death (still in shock), today has had a lot of ups:
(1) i am no longer unemployed!
so now i can
(2) afford to see my favorite band/people ever, newly dubbed The Spring Standards at their EP release show!

Heather, Smith and Cleare continue to amaze me day after day. Looking back on the first time I saw them play in the teensy basement of the Knitting Factory, I would have NEVER expected they would become such a huge part of my life (in under 2 years, at that). Right off the bat, it was a given that they were extremely talented and I would be coming back to see them play again and again, but I never even dreamed of getting to know them on this personal level that they allow all of their fans to be a part of. I have never met more caring and driven people in my entire life and I am so thankful every day for all that they give to their fans and friends. They're truly one of a kind. Words could never do them justice. I am beyond honored to be a part of their lives, for they have made mine so much more beautiful.

today is a special day!

not only is it seth kirschner's birthday, one of the sweetest guys in town, but it has been precisely one year since johnny won his tony. so much has happened since this date last year and i'm glad to say that most of the changes since then have been for the better. thank you to everyone who has come into my life via spring awakening. even if the show has not been a direct part of my life since january, the people i met through this show mean the world to me.
